When possums invade your trees, they can cause a lot of damage to the tree canopy which will impact the overall health and vigour of the tree. Tree care experts have several strategies for making your trees less appealing to possums. Here are some useful tips:
Install guards and netting
- Possum guard tree: Place smooth metal collars or plastic guards around tree trunks which will make it difficult for possums to access the tree via the trunk. The location of these possum guards on the trunk will vary depending on where the possum is accessing the tree. It’s best to install these in a non-invasive manner that won’t damage the tree i.e. pop rivets or drill the guard into a length of timber between the guard and the tree trunk.
- Tree net: Place netting over the canopy of the tree and then attach the netting in a non-invasive manner to the tree, this will prevent possums from accessing the tree via adjacent trees. This is more practical with smaller trees. Ensure the netting is tight and covers the entire canopy.
Isolation pruning
- Remove low-hanging branches: Possums use trees to climb and access food. By keeping branches at least 10 feet off the ground, you create a barrier that’s harder for them to access.
- Prune tree canopies clear of each other: Isolation pruning can prevent possums from accessing trees by jumping across from one canopy to another.
Use Scent Repellents
- Citrus and garlic: Possums dislike strong scents like citrus, garlic, or vinegar. Placing citrus peels or garlic cloves in mesh bags around the tree may help deter them.
- Commercial repellents: There are commercial animal repellents available that can be sprayed around the branches and canopy of the tree to deter possums. Look for those designed for use on trees and that won’t harm the plants.
Encourage Natural Predators
- Attracting owls: Install owl boxes or perches to encourage owls, which are natural predators of possums.
- Create an ecosystem: A balanced ecosystem with other animals like hawks or snakes can help keep possum numbers in check, though this is a longer-term strategy.
Remove Food Sources
- Clean up fallen fruit: Possums are attracted to easily accessible food, so be sure to pick up fallen fruit, nuts, and leaves under your trees.
- Secure rubbish bins: Possums are often drawn to garbage or compost bins. Make sure trash is secured and food scraps are not accessible.
Lighting
- Use motion-sensor lights: Possums are nocturnal, and bright lights that turn on when they approach can help deter them from your trees.
- Light pollution: Installing some solar-powered lights on or near the tree can make it less appealing to possums who prefer the dark.
