Understanding AS 4970-2009: Protecting Trees on Development Sites

When it comes to tree protection on development sites the key standard is AS 4970-2009, which is the Protection of Trees on Development Sites. These standards provide guidelines for arborists and developers to ensure that trees are protected during development and construction activities.

This standard defines the Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) and Structural Root Zone (SRZ). The TPZ and SRZ are a vital part of protecting trees during development, as it provides a safe space for the tree’s roots to grow without being impacted upon by construction activities.

Tree Protection Fencing (TPF)

Tree Protection Fencing (TPF) should be erected before any machinery or materials are bought onto site and before any works commence, including demolition.

  • TPF should be installed as close to the TPZ as practically possible provided that it does not encroach onto the road, footpath, crossover or proposed works
  • TPF should be a minimum 1.8m high and comprised of wire mesh (or similar)
  • supported by concrete feet (or similar)
  • TPF should remain intact for the duration of the project
  • TPF should only be removed or shifted with the approval of the Project Arborist

Prior to the commencement of and during any works, the approved tree protection plan must be available on site. Key stages where monitoring and certification will be required will be identified by the tree protection plan. The tree protection plan and its requirements should be introduced to the site manager and the contractors at a pre-construction meeting.
